What do you do when you are not working?
I spend a lot of time with my family. We are a very tight pack. When I am not with them I spend time in the mountains of Franschhoek where I have designed a track where I train. The course which I call “the track” consist of hiking, mountain biking and paddling on the Berg river dam. On the weekends I surf or spearfish with my friends.
Why did you choose Elgin, Franschhoek and Tulbagh?
When I started Paserene’s random events led me to the differents sites. There was a need for something and I reacted and then a series of events took place and one thing led to the other and then I found the site. I did not set out right from the beginning to make wines from these sites. I was led there.
What is the swallow story?
At the time I lived in Cape Town. It was 2012. I spent a lot of time in bars with my friends. There is one called “The Power and the Glory”. Inside there is a lot of biological text book style drawings of plants and bugs. I thought that would make cool labels. That night at another bar I talked to an old school friend and she told me about Lorraine Loots. So I called her and asked her to create the bird. The swallow represents the dynamic in the brand where the girl is the constant.
