Paserene Marathon 2018 receives 5 stars in the 2021 John Platter Guide

Achievements are nothing if they cannot be shared, and we are thrilled to announce that Paserene Marathon 2018 has received a 5 star rating in the 2021 John Platter Guide.

The John Platter Guide was first released in 1980, and 21 years later is the definitive guide to South Africa wine. The coveted 5 stars is much sought-after and only a handful of wines will ever achieve this prestigious rating.

The newly released Paserene Marathon 2018 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time, and is a true reflection of Martin’s passion for this varietal. The grapes harvested for this vintage are exclusively from our farm in Tulbagh. 2018 was a small harvest mainly due to the worse drought our wine region has experienced in the past 100 years. The dry weather throughout the season did however assist in keeping diseases at bay, and the vines generally very healthy. A small crop was delivered to the winery with good colour and excellent concentration in March 2018.

“This vintage of Marathon is a Cabernet Sauvignon dream for me. I have always believed that SA can make incredible Cabernet from our terroir, and we have been focusing on this varietal at our farm in Tulbagh for some time”, says Martin Smith, winemaker and co-owner at Paserene.

Marathon shows a deep black to purple colour, with a youthful vibrant purple rim. On the palate you can expect black berries and black currants in almost equal amounts, creme de cassis and dried black cherry jam with figs and fruitcake.

“The tannin, fruit and alcohol are in perfect harmony. Put this wine in your cellar for at least 5 years before opening. It will last for the next 50 years if cellared correctly”, says Smith as he briefly sums up Marathon 2018. “This wine is a testament to years of experience, hard work and perseverance”, he continues. Receiving 5 stars is a tremendous accomplishment for Martin and his team, and naturally they are elated with the news. To read more about Paserene Marathon, please visit our website.
