Elements Emerald 2019

The Emerald is a well-integrated Sauvignon Blanc, with a bright green to gold colouring. It is citrus-focused, with a tropical and berry-heavy undercurrent. There is a minerality that adds a good weight to what is already a well-balanced wine, as well as a roundness on the palate.

ART OF MAKING

How the wine is made

At our winery, we do not use generic barrels because we want to produce extraordinary results. Our new barrels are seasoned, dry, and are without toasting for up to five years, before being steamed. They are then used for 16 months to make the wine. There is an inherent patience in the making of our wine.

Martin is a precision winemaker, rarely adding anything to his wines, and he chooses not to filter them. He prides himself on spending the time and effort on exactly what  goes into the bottle, to ensure that what comes out is as authentic as possible. When you drink our hand-crafted wine, you are creating a moment in time that will never be forgotten.

CULTIVAR

Where the grapes are from

The grapes for our Elements Range are sourced from three different vineyards, all of which have different soils and climates. This Sauvignon Blanc is sourced equally from Elgin (50%), and Franschhoek (50%).

Soils and climates

Elgin is the coolest area with bokkeveld shale. It has a cooler climate which is best for aromatic grapes, allowing them to retain their bright acidity.

Franschhoek is more moderate in climate and has sandy soil. It is ideal for more tropical notes in Sauvignon Blanc grapes, and the shadows of the mountains help to moderate the climate for more complex aromas in the wine.

Tulbagh in the Breede River Valley has a hot climate that has cool evenings, with decomposed shale soil. The climate leads to grapes that have developed rich flavour over time and that have retained their acidity.

TASTING NOTES

What you can expect when tasting

The nose is bright and fresh, with notes of green fig and green apple, not your expected asparagus and gooseberry aromas. The true difference is on the palate with a tropical explosion.

The Emerald is an Elgin and Franschhoek wine with confidence and a powerful flavour. The nose also has a whiff of nettles, blackcurrant leaves, green pepper, and ground white pepper. But, our Emerald truly is a jewel when it comes to the palate.

You will find juicy Cantaloupe (spanspek) flavour, intermingled with delectably ripe mango, passionfruit, and pineapple. It has a rounded, luxurious mouthfeel and a long, lingering finish.

When you pour a glass of the Emerald, you will truly feel as though you are in Elgin, as the essence of this terroir is distilled throughout the wine.

LABEL ART

The art on the label

For our Elements range, we wanted to highlight the playfulness of the wines and of our winery in Franschhoek, and appeal to an audience who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

The swings represent our more fun-loving side, and the swift (included in almost every label) represents our winemaker, Martin Smith. The elegant background colours highlight the wine inside the bottle and the grapes used in its production.

The deep green of the Emerald showcases the dazzling  colour of the wine and the natural freshness of the grapes.

The stunning artwork is by Lorraine Loots and Carmen Ziervogel.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Food and wine combinations

This delicious Sauvignon Blanc would pair well with a fresh Caprese salad, drizzled in home-made basil pesto to really bring out the green notes of the wine. A light tomato-based pasta dish is another perfect partner for the Emerald – especially perfect for a summer evening dinner.

The flavours of a baked goats cheese drizzled with honey complement this wine nicely, and adding a green salad with a citrusy dressing to the mix will enhance it even more. A Charcuterie board can make for the perfect wine tasting meal with the Emerald as your tipple of choice.
