ART OF MAKING

How the wine is made

How the
wine is made

At our winery, we do not use generic barrels because we want to produce extraordinary results. Our new barrels are seasoned, dry, and are without toasting for up to five years, before being steamed. They are then used for 16 months to make the wine. There is an inherent patience in the making of our wine.

Martin is a precision winemaker, rarely adding anything to his wines, and he chooses not to filter them. He prides himself on spending the time and effort on exactly what  goes into the bottle, to ensure that what comes out is as authentic as possible. When you drink our hand-crafted wine, you are creating a moment in time that will never be forgotten.

grapes are from

The grapes for our Elements Range are sourced from three different vineyards, all of which have different soils and climates. These grapes for our gorgeous Dark are from Tulbagh (30%) and our Franschhoek vineyard (35%).

Soils and climates

Soils and climates

Elgin is the coolest, with soils of Bokkeveld shale. The climate is best for aromatic grapes, allowing them to retain bright acidity.

Franschhoek is more moderate and therefore ideal for growing fragile, elegant wines. Mountain shadows temper any heat, bringing complexity in the wine.

Tulbagh in the Breede River Valley is the warmer of the trio.

TASTING NOTES

What you can expect when tasting

What you can
expect when tasting

The nose is gentle yet defiant, and opens with the aroma of pink peppercorns and herby notes. You will feel as though you are walking through a herb garden on an early summer evening, when the herbs are fragrant and aromatic.

There are notes of lavender and thyme, mingled with deep blueberry and plum favours, as well as light iodine. It is youthful but not without character, focusing on elegance and spice. Dark chocolate and warm spices bring in the finish.

This is truly a Syrah that can transport you to the South of France – or to our unique Franschhoek winery – with a single sip.

LABEL ART

The art on the label

The art
on the label

For our Elements range, we wanted to highlight the playfulness of the wines and of our winery in Franschhoek, and appeal to an audience who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

A child’s swing depicted on the label suggests a happy, innocent space. It is the wine’s invitation to the consumer, to embark on a journey inward and savour each moment in a sip. The swift (included in almost every label) represents our winemaker, Martin Smith. The elegant background colours reflects the deep richness of the wine and the grapes.

The stunning artwork is by Carmen Ziervogel.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Food and wine
combinations

A Syrah can always be paired with barbecued meat, especially beef and lamb with plenty of herbs and spices. Slow-cooked stews are a match made in heaven for our Dark, as they bring out the rich, plummy notes of the grape.

Poultry, like roast chicken or pan-roasted duck, are ideal for a meal pairing and grilled vegetables make for a tasty side-dish. Grilled or seared tuna are great choices for fish dishes because the fatty fish can stand up to the richness of the wine.
